The high level:

The Community Engagement Manager (CEM) is part of an energetic team of leaders working together to leverage Reading Partners mission in the community. The Community Engagement Manager s main role is to lead, develop, and mobilize a small team of AmeriCorps members to recruit, train, celebrate and retain a diverse portfolio of volunteers to serve as literacy tutors in our reading centers. Reporting directly to the Director of Development, the Community Engagement Manager strategizes and project manages the overall volunteer onboarding strategy for the region including all aspects of the in person and remote volunteer onboarding process and training and management of a team responsible for onboarding more than 750 volunteers in FY23. The Community Engagement Manager is an expert relationship maximizer, is goal-oriented, and is excited by both strategic and on-the-ground work. This role will partner with the Director of Development on external partnership cultivation and stewardship.

What you ll do:

Each fiscal year, recruit, hire, train, coach and manage a team of three to four Reading Partners AmeriCorps members toward successfully reaching or exceeding volunteer onboarding goals.

  • Ensure strong performance and team culture
  • Create opportunities for team members to develop professionally
  • Participate in annual AmeriCorps hiring to find excellent candidates
  • Alongside the Program Team, plan and execute a three week annual summer training course for new and returning AmeriCorps members in advance of the start of the school year

Each year, evaluate, develop as necessary and execute a comprehensive volunteer onboarding strategy to meet and exceed active volunteer targets.

  • In FY23, ensure Reading Partners onboards and starts 750 volunteers across the Silicon Valley region.
  • Oversee separate onboarding processes for in person and virtual tutoring
  • Monitor, analyze, audit, and communicate volunteer data and onboarding systems and processes.
  • Ensure volunteers experience a positive, responsive, and informative onboarding process and remain engaged prior to pairing with a student
  • Create and oversee delivery of trainings and communications to onboarding volunteers
  • With the support of other staff members, step in to directly onboard volunteers in the summer months between AmeriCorps rotations
  • Monitor progress of volunteers through the pipeline applying a REDI (race, equity, diversity and inclusion) lens, ensuring a racially diverse set of onboarded volunteers
  • Seek opportunities to build new partnerships to increase volunteer pipeline

Collaborate closely with all departments at Reading Partners Silicon Valley and with the national Community Engagement team to drive towards meeting student and volunteer enrollment goals

  • Prepare for and participate in all staff engagement opportunities
  • Engage across departments through information sharing and collaboration
  • Work closely with the Development Director to ensure strong overall progress towards goals, team culture and ongoing professional development opportunities
  • Collaborate with the national office to implement org wide initiatives

Positively impact all aspects of the volunteer experience by…

  • Act as a strong advocate for Reading Partners Silicon Valley programming inside and outside of the organization
  • Remain up to date and ensure ongoing learning around best industry practices
  • Serve as a Reading Partners weekly tutor to understand the volunteer experience
  • Support tutor recruitment and engagement efforts as needed

How you ll do it:

Leadership & Management:

  • Demonstrate a genuine interest in coaching, inspiring, and developing emerging professionals toward goals. Demonstrate an ability to provide clear guidance and goals, to delegate, and to provide growth opportunities while supporting progress along the way. Be able to recruit, hire, onboard, and deliver high-quality training to AmeriCorps members and volunteers. Support our emerging national network of Community Engagement Managers and other community engagement staff.

Relationship Development & Collaboration:

  • Leverage existing relationships and build new transformational relationships in the community and with corporate partners. Establish highly collaborative cross-functional relationships, and work effectively with all internal stakeholders for both organizational fundraising and program delivery. Celebrate wins with all stakeholders.

Communication:

  • Externally, demonstrate the ability to genuinely promote Reading Partners and our mission through a variety of strategies. Provide excellent customer service to partners and volunteers. Have a high level of comfort with public speaking and with crafting mass communications. Be able to differentiate communication depending upon your audience.
  • Internally, set up strong systems for communication and messaging, tailor communication to audiences, and contextualize messaging. Demonstrate a strong aptitude for effective communication, remotely and in person, with direct reports, school stakeholders, and other Reading Partners staff. Be able to conduct difficult conversations with grace and ease.

Project Management:

  • Create innovative solutions in the face of competition for resources, time, etc. with a high degree of adaptability and flexibility. Anticipate challenges and/or questions, and proactively execute solutions. Understand larger strategic priorities and make measurable progress against these larger goals. Be able to make quick, sound, and on-the-fly decisions that consider all stakeholders. See the bigger picture and also drill down to smaller details to connect the dots.

Data & Systems Management:

  • Become an expert in the systems Reading Partners uses to onboard and engage volunteers. Display strong attention to detail, noticing when numbers look off or audits aren t showing what they need to show, and coach others on their data work. Find solutions to systemic issues, and lead on implementation and coaching of those solutions.

About you!

You ll be successful in this role if you:

  • Have 3+ years of progressive experience in customer service, marketing, client management, community organizing or similar field
  • Have direct management experience of volunteers, interns and/or emerging professionals
  • Have database management experience and high level of comfort with MS Office, Google Apps and Salesforce
  • Have access to reliable transportation to travel within Silicon Valley on a daily basis
  • Have flexibility and adaptability in work style and work schedule, with ability to work in person 3 or more days per week
  • Hold a Bachelor s degree and/or equivalent prior experience
  • Can prove eligibility to work in the U.S. legally

  • We offer a competitive salary commensurate with experience. This is a full-time, exempt, salaried position. Pay for this position is between $60,000 - 63,000 annually.
