The School of Dental Medicine has an opening for a full-time University Staff (unclassified) Dental Assistant position.

Job Responsibilities

Chair Side Assistance – 95% (Essential Function)

  • Patient preparation and positioning;
  • clinical area preparation for the treatment of patients;
  • use of sterile techniques and infection control procedures;
  • Performs appropriate aseptic and sterilization techniques.
  • Provide demonstration and instruction in the assigned areas of technical dentistry practices when assisting the dental students.
  • Inspects appropriate instruments/tools for good condition/working order.
  • Performs dental intraoral and extraoral radiographs using appropriate technique, x-ray equipment and safety equipment.
  • Develops, mounts and identifies radiographic films.
  • Troubleshoots the scanner to make sure films are being developed with high quality

Clinical Education Support5% (Essential Function)

  • Support the educational mission of the SDM, including role modeling and coaching students how to function as a dental assistant in both four-handed chairside activities and in clinical operations support.

Other Duties(Non-essential Function)

On occasion, this position may be assigned other duties needed to help drive to the vision, fulfill the mission, and uphold the organizational values of CU Denver/Anschutz and the SDM.

Minimum Requirements

  • Two years of dental assisting experience
    • Successful completion of an accredited dental assisting program may substitute for one year of experience. NOTE: If exercising the education substitution, applicants MUST attach a copy of their dental assisting certificate to their application materials no later than the closing date listed in the announcement.
  • Must possess current valid CPR and/or BLS certification
  • Must demonstrate a comprehensive knowledge of dental materials, their use, maintenance and storage

Preferred Qualifications

  • Recent (within the last 5 years) experience working in a fast paced dental environment
  • Experience with clinical area preparation in a dental clinic and/or office.
  • Experience taking x-rays
  • Experience performing and developing digital dental radiographs.
  • Experience in sterilizing dental tools, instruments and equipment.
  • Experience working with students and faculty in a higher education and/or academic medical environment
  • Experience working with multiple doctors

  • Ability to work independently and exercise judgment in decision making

  • Strong oral communication skills
  • Knowledge of dental terminology and instrumentation
  • Knowledge of current dental materials, tools and instruments, and proper use and technique
  • Ability to demonstrate a high level, knowledge, and proficiency in all phases of dental assisting
  • Familiarity with OSHA and HIPAA guidelines

Decision Scope:

  • Determining what instruments will be needed in the clinics.
  • Makes recommendations on instrument/equipment repair or replacement.
  • Judgment is used by studying the patient information to identify what means of dental assistance the resident/faculty member will need when providing the patient treatment. Identifying this level of need serves as guidance for determining what the specialized instruments setups will be.
  • Deciding which type of materials to use for dental procedures. Must stay up to date on any new materials or instruments available and/or new requests or needs of the faculty


Interaction with students, faculty or staff on a daily basis to meet the demands of clinical and educational operations. Strong communication skills and problem solving skills for dealing with a variety of personalities and various levels of stress at times.

Working Schedules

  • Position may be assigned weekend and/or evening shifts
  • Position may be assigned a 4/10 work week schedule

Salary and Benefits:

The salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established at $3,813 to $3,986 per month.

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

This position is eligible for overtime compensation.
