The option to work partially remote for two (2) days a week with an alternative work schedule with flexible hours is available.

LOCATION: Pee Dee Public Health Region

HEADQUARTERS NEGOTIABLE: Depending on candidates preference (though working in the Pee Dee region is preferred).


The Regional Medical Director (RMD) serves as the primary clinician overseeing/guiding all aspects of clinical and/or clinically related care provided by region staff. As a member of the Regional Leadership Team helps to define the mission/vision of the Region. Duties include: Operating as a clinical consultant to address day-to-day aspects related to the provision of public health services in the Region; has oversight into the supervisor of all clinical staff (i.e., medical practitioners, nurse practitioners, nurses, social workers, pharmacists, technicians, technologists, etc.); provides information that helps guide others in understand public health programs/services and the provision of public health services (i.e., state staff, regional staff, community practitioners, those whose role impacts the health of the community at large, etc.); maintains mutually beneficial relationships with community providers, hospitals, medical schools, residency programs, regulatory agencies, etc.); and is the primary medical consultant in the Regional Command Center during public health emergencies.

Provides medical/ epidemiological consultation for the region, other public health professionals, health care providers, and public for surveillance and control of communicable diseases. Assists the DHEC central office programs in the development of policies/procedures and standing orders with a focus on science-based strategies, legal mandates, and PH practice. Assures regional medical consultant coverage during working hours, nights, weekends, and holidays for disease reporting and emergency response.
Monitors and investigates cases and outbreaks of reportable diseases; Directs outbreak control measures in cooperation with DHEC staff and other medical practitioners in the region; Assists with the analysis and interpretation of disease surveillance data. Assists in using Continuous Quality Improvement {CQI) principles to evaluate surveillance and response processes with a focus on science-based strategies.

Serves as a clinical role model, observes work of nurse practitioners and nurse clinicians, and may provide clinical services when needed. Serves as preceptor for DHEC Advanced Practice Registered Nurses.

Serves as a medical clinician for the Tuberculosis (TB) Control Program. Provides medical leadership and assures processes are conducted to assure science-based strategies and practices.

Responsible for conducting TB clinics and provides direct patient care for TB suspects, those with TB disease and/or latent TB infection. Provides TB medical reviews, reviews TB chest radiographs and other studies previously interpreted by radiologists as a component of the medical evaluation process, provides ongoing patient medical management until closure.

Provides consultation and direction to Central Office staff and the public health nurses providing nurse-managed care to the persons with TB disease or infection and recommends referrals to outside providers for problems that are not TB related. Provides TB consultation to the private medical community, other community providers, facilities and universities/colleges.

Maintains expertise in TB treatment and control standards and published guidelines and literature and provides recommendations to the Central Office staff related to TB and TB medical practice. Monitors, analyzes and interprets TB case/surveillance data & assists in directing interventions to assure data-based decisions. Provides backup consultation and coverage for the other TB medical clinicians within the state. Provides continuing education to the TB nursing staff as requested. Works with the TB Central Office staff to assure program standards are met.

Serves as a leader in the region and community in public health issues. Stays abreast of current public health trends and best practices regarding public improvement. Advocates for public health systems changes.

Maintains linkages with external community partners to move the public health agenda forward in a manner best meeting the needs of the communities. Maintains a keen awareness of individual community needs and as appropriate advocates on the behalf of the communities.

Assists with the coordination and support of regional Public Health Advocates to maintain consistency in standards and appropriate action.

Participates in disaster preparedness activities, training, and planning. Maintains an operational awareness of all PHP and response activities and Plans. Serves as a leader in the region and state during times of emergency. Coordinates with the Public Health Preparedness Director, the Program (nursing) Director and the Epidemiology Surveillance and Response.

Coordinator to integrate disease control and emergency response activities. Participates in and assists with the response to Public Health Outbreaks and priority response efforts. Ensures that hospitals and private care providers are aware of agency functions in the event of an acute disease case, outbreak investigation, and/or large-scale public health emergency. Provides strategic direction and planning for emergencies, outbreaks, and public health priorities.

Provides training and education programs in the region for DHEC staff; health care providers and the public about surveillance and control of communicable diseases. Assists with providing timely and accurate information about public health issues in response to media requests.


MD or DO, graduation from an accredited medical school and current, unrestricted Licensed by the Board of Medical Examiners to practice medicine in South Carolina. Current and ongoing Board Certification by an approved American medical specialty board in either preventive medicine, family practice, or internal medicine.

  • A master’s degree in public health and/or relevant training as a CDC Epidemic Intelligence Service Officer or other similar Epidemiologic training program, plus 3 years of experience in a public health clinical setting.

DHEC employees are required to participate in disaster preparedness during hazardous weather or declaration of an emergency. This involves being subject to duty and or call on a 24-hour basis.

You must possess a valid driver's license and have access to a reliable transportation.
This position may require working early (before 8:30 am), evening (after 5:00 pm) and/or Saturday's on occasion.

Ability to lift 30 pounds and stand for long periods of time.

Immunization Requirements:
All new employees who are healthcare providers will be required to provide documentation of immunity or be immunized against measles, mumps, rubella, pertussis, varicella, Hepatitis B prior to beginning employment.

Public Health staff with job-specific risk of COVID-19 exposure who choose not to receive the COVID-19 vaccine or provide documentation of prior vaccination, or who are unable to be vaccinated due to medical contraindications or religious exemption, will be required to receive routine periodic COVID-19 testing by DHEC. Vaccinated employees will not be required to receive periodic testing but may elect to be tested to monitor their health status.

Please note that the agency may require an official, certified copy of your transcript or diploma prior to hiring. Institutions of higher learning must be recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation.
