The DirectX team is looking for researchers to advance applications of machine learning to graphics and gaming. The DirectX team is responsible for developing platform technologies such as Direct3D, DirectML which form the basis of gaming on Xbox, Windows PCs, and other Microsoft devices. Machine Learning in gaming is an exciting new area of research and this is your opportunity to be responsible for developing novel applications of machine learning that make a huge impact, thrill customers and advance the state of the art in graphics and gaming.Responsibilities
You will conduct state of the art applied research in the area of machine learning for graphics and gaming. You will be part of a team of researchers and engineers involved in finding novel machine learning alternatives to traditional graphics algorithms. You will play a role in developing efficient machine learning algorithms for neural processors that will be used in the next generation of Microsoft devices for gaming and graphics.Qualifications
Required Qualifications- Doctorate in relevant field
- OR equivalent experience
- 3+ years of research experience in the area of machine learning for graphics or computer vision
- Publications in the aforementioned area in peer reviewed journals and conferences
- Prior research in convolutional neural networks or state-of-the-art networks such as vision transformers
- Deep expertise in machine learning tools such as Pytorch or Tensorflow, Python
- Knowledge of traditional computer graphics and image processing algorithms
- Experience with gaming
- Knowledge of system programming and hardware internals

Research Sciences IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $112,000 - $218,400 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $145,800 - $238,600 per year.
Microsoft has different base pay ranges for different work locations within the United States, which allows us to pay employees competitively and consistently in different geographic markets (see below). The range above reflects the potential base pay across the U.S. for this role (except as noted below); the applicable base pay range will depend on what ultimately is determined to be the candidate’s primary work location. Individual base pay depends on various factors, in addition to primary work location, such as complexity and responsibility of role, job duties/requirements, and relevant experience and skills. Base pay ranges are reviewed and typically updated each year. Offers are made within the base pay range applicable at the time.

The way we define roles includes two things: discipline (the type of work) and career stage (scope and complexity). The career stage has two parts – the first identifies whether the role is a manager (M), an individual contributor (IC), an admin-technician-retail (ATR) job, or an intern.
