Overview: Support the achievement of St. Marks objectives by being the safety champion for all areas at all times, directing daily activities of production areas, being the management representative on the off-shifts, and be responsible for emergency response on the off-shifts. Requires broad scope of supervisory and management responsibility in a manufacturing environment. Hazardous nature of product places premium on rigid and effective adherence to safety, regulatory and environmental policies.
Must be able to work rotating shifts and occasional overtime. Major Position Responsibilities:
  • Conducts safety performance evaluation inspections, documents the results, recommends solutions to fixing the problems, and coordinates efforts to fix said problems. Monitors compliance to operating procedures, area housekeeping, start-up checklists, and area and plant safety rules. Identifies need for and works with Area General Supervisors to train/develop hourly employees.
  • Responsible for monitoring quality of product on all shifts. This includes monitoring employee adherence to process orders and SOP’s; generation of CCF’s, gathering required approvals for CCF’s, and communicating required changes on CCF’s to affected employees; and for checking and approving Blend Orders on the off-shifts.
  • Coordinates priorities within the Superintendents' and General Supervisors' expectations to meet the daily Production Department requirements. Acts as an advisor when conflicts develop on work assignments, and coaches and trains the Chief Operator who is responsible for coordinating Operator activities.
  • Supervise hourly employees to ensure effective performance of duties to minimize overtime and control department cost related to yields and raw materials. Monitors and follows up on the development of hourly employees and advises Management on training needs and development.
  • Conducts pre-shift meetings for all production shifts. Monitors the daily shift change coordination conducted by the Chief Operators in the production operations to ensure a smooth shift transition and process continuity.
  • Serves as the fill-in for General Supervisors in their absence, transmitting daily notes and overseeing general supervisory functions. Acts as the management representative for all plant activities during off shifts when other responsible management representatives are not present (QA, Pilot Plant, Warehouse, etc.)
  • Coordinates and handles administrative duties that includes employees reporting off work and employee medical problems. Transports injured employees as appropriate to the front gate for further evaluation.
  • Responsible for off-shift disciplinary action that requires immediate management action or investigation of conditions or actions that could lead to D.A.'s.
  • Supervise hourly Maintenance employees assigned to their shift, directing activities on the off shifts. Resolves maintenance priority conflicts with the Area Chief Operators. Serves as technical expert on process and equipment and stays involved, yet strives for the development of hourly personnel in setting priorities.
  • Responsible for off-shift emergency response and is the Incident Commander until relieved by the Chief of Fire and Security or the Deputy Chief of Fire and Security. Participates in training exercises to prepare for Incident Command responsibilities. Also responsible for contacting appropriate Management Personnel in emergency response situations.
  • Coordinates off-shift Incident Report and Spill Investigations and is responsible for documentation and notification of appropriate management.
  • Responsible for off-shift compliance with Critical Safe Procedures, such as: Hot Work, Modified Hot Work, Equipment Lockout and Tagout, and Decontamination. Off-shift responsibilities on Hot Work and Decontamination (white tag) require notification of Loss Prevention personnel to co-sign the approval.
  • Responsible Production representative for approval of off-shift Confined Space Entry Permits.
  • Monitors and advises on the control of waste treatment flows and utility requirements on the off-shifts. Responsible for contacting Management Personnel on issues requiring assistance, and for directing work assignments to fix those issues when they arise.
Basic Qualifications: Education and/or Experience:
  • High School diploma or equivalent with knowledge of Ball Powder® process. Previous supervisory experience strongly preferred.
Major Competencies/Skills:
  • Strong sense of safety and quality.
  • Be able to interface with employees on all levels and support departments of the plant, requiring strong supervisory, communication, managerial, and administrative skills.
  • Sophisticated processes necessitate good decision making and problem solving skills, along with good technical knowledge.
  • Job requires the ability to gain in-depth knowledge of plant safety processes, operating procedures, and administrative procedures.
  • Thorough understanding of applicable environmental and hazardous waste regulations required (company supplies initial and annual training).
