Job description
We are seeking a Senior Instructional Designer who will provide vision, leadership, and coordination in designing, developing, and delivering fully online courses and technology-enhanced instructional materials for graduate programs delivered by Advanced Academic Programs (AAP). The Senior Instructional Designer will maintain AAP standards of excellence in course development and delivery, and act as a project lead in various assigned special projects necessary for the maintenance and development of online courses.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:
Instructional Design (60%)

Lead the analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation of complex courses, ensuring competency alignment among courses to achieve program objectives.
Consult with faculty to identify and integrate the appropriate instructional design and technologies needed to employ evidence-based instructional practices to enhance the learning process.
Collaborate and consult with faculty on the effective use of Web-based resources, multimedia technologies, and instructional strategies to develop or revise their courses
Provide recommendations for interface design, sequencing of instruction, active learning, and use of assessments activities.
Coordinate the development of instructional materials that are functional, informative, engaging, and consistent with sound instructional design principles, including alignment of course objectives with learning activities, instructional resources, and assessments.
Create supporting material/media (simulations, role plays, games, case studies, etc.)
Utilize multimedia technology and authoring tools to develop interactive and engaging instructional resources including video, audio podcasts, and graphics.
Research and evaluate new and emerging technologies, instructional design theories, and approaches and policies for potential application to instructional design.
Manage project timelines and coordinate with team members and partners to meet project deliverables.
Collaborate with multimedia team to develop media products for use in online courses including presentations, video, audio podcasts, and graphics.
Monitor and stay abreast of new and emerging technologies.
Study and evaluate instructional design theories for application to a variety of program and department needs.
Read and stay abreast of JHU and peer institutional best practices and evaluate them for potential application in instructional design at AAP.

Performance Management (15%)

Conduct annual reviews.
Staff development.
Provide ongoing feedback and constructive criticism.
Prioritize and direct work efforts, providing guidance and direction.
Conflict resolution.
Motivate for higher collaboration and performance.
Conduct interviews and make recommendations for hire.

Project Lead for Courses, Services, & Projects (10%)

Collaborate and consult with AAP stakeholders on the effective use of instructional design strategies, web-based resources, multimedia technologies, and instructional software and systems to improve teaching for course delivery.
Serve as project lead, directing teams with technical trainers, instructional technologist, web developers and multimedia specialists for course development and other special projects.
Research and evaluate new and emerging technologies, instructional design theories, and policies for potential application to IRC services.
Provide recommendations on the strategic, tactical and operational issues associated with the adoption of instructional technologies and instructional design processes.
Assist with developing budget projections.
Conduct necessary project analysis.
Evalutate the instructional effectiveness of instructional design processes.

Workshops

Plan, develop and implements workshops and other activities that will promote teaching, learning, and assessment in areas related to learning strategies, instructional strategies and technology, and student learning outcomes.
Conduct individual training and coaching for faculty to meet instructional design and development learning opportunities and needs.
Facilitate workshops and office hours over three on ground campuses and online.
Offer workshops and office hours in a frequency that satisfies faculty needs.
Track and analyze issues raised by faculty.
Respond to faculty consultation requests within 24 hours.
Receive satisfactory feedback from faculty regarding the workshops offered and provided consults.

Special Project Lead

In coordination with accommodation requests (ADA and Section 508), proactively finds solutions to course deficiencies, makes strategic recommendations, and implements any changes necessary to assist faculty members.
Represents the IRC at JHU technology meetings and functions.
Develop and analyze data to provide regular reports on courses, faculty, and student needs.
Assist with course readiness during peak times at semester start-up.
Complete work in a timely manner.
Demonstrate willingness to go above and beyond to help others.
Develop reports to analyze instructional design processes and recommend improvements.

Internal & External Contacts

Collaborate with JHU Instructional Design group to share best practices throughout the Hopkins community.
Collaborate with the Center for Educational Resources (CER) on various training and instructional design projects.
Collaborate with Library Services on student orientation, copyright, reserves and student support systems.
Work with professional certification groups as necessary to maintain institutional certification:
Quality Matters (QM)

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):
Graduate Degree in Instructional Design, Instructional Technology, Education, or related field.
Three years of professional level experience in course design and development, faculty training, or program/course assessment/evaluation required.
Significant additional related experience may substitute for advanced degree.

  • JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for the required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

Preferred Qualifications:
Two to three years of online teaching experience at the higher education level is preferred.
Two to three years of experience supervising assigned instructional design staff and managing the course development and design processes is highly preferred.

Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Instructional Design

Must be service oriented, self-motivated, organized, and a detail-oriented team player who is capable of participating in collaborative instructional development processes and activities.
In-depth understanding of learning theories and instructional design models.
In-depth knowledge of multimedia (audio, graphics, and video).
In-depth Knowledge of and demonstrated ability to apply Instructional Design models/principles (Backward Design, ADDIE; etc.) to an online environment
Knowledge of various course assessment techniques and methods.
Knowledge of cognitive theories of learning and motivation theories, (e.g. ARCS).
Ability to solve problems in enterprising and proactive ways.
Ability to conduct quality reviews of existing online courses using Quality Matters rubric or other assessment tool.
In-depth understanding of Section 508, UDL and applicable accessibility standards relating to online courses.
Familiarity with copyright laws and creative commons.
Knowledge of current and emerging instructional technologies.
Demonstrated ability to train one-on-one and in a group setting in a collaborative and professional way using multiple modalities.

Managerial

Ability to supervise IRC team members and mentor instructional designers.
Excellent time management skills, organizational skills, ability to prioritize tasks, and the ability to deal with multiple constituencies concurrently in a dynamic and fast-paced environment.
Ability to work independently to solve problems in enterprising and proactive ways.
Ability to monitor and report on status of assigned projects.
Ability to analyze data and communicate trends and issues.

Collaborative

Communication skills (oral, written, and interpersonal) must be at a professional level.
Must be able to work effectively with multiple constituencies in a fast-paced, dynamic work environment.
Requires a customer service orientation to work well with faculty, staff, and vendors.

Technical Qualifications or Specialized Certifications:
Experience with web-based course management tools (such as Blackboard) and online conferencing software (such as Zoom).
In-depth knowledge of course authoring tools (e.g., Articulate Storyline, Adobe Captivate, etc).
Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint, basic HTML editing software, and basic image manipulation software (Photoshop).
Experience on Mac and PC platforms.
